The Charybdis is a Europan creature that can spawn in any missions taking you below 2,500~ meters.

Description[]

The Charybdis resembles a massive tentacled Dolphin, with many, bizarrely shaped fins and tentacles and a forward-facing jaw with sharp red teeth. It also has a longer tentacle ending in a sharp point as a tail. The Charybdis features charcoal grey and sharp red coloration. There are two vertical stripes heading down from the head to the base of the neck. The body and tentacles possess a very rough, leathery texture, with a rusted metallic sheen, especially on the face and on the larger tentacles.

The Charybdis can naturally be found in the Abyss.

In-game[]

The Charybdis is unusually quick for its size, and is extremely bulky to boot (with higher health than the Moloch). Since its health and damage are so high it's highly advised to not engage a Charybdis, and to try to evade it if possible. Fighting a Charybdis on open sea is a death sentence for many daring crews as their bite can kill humans in a single hit by Bleeding, but they are notorious for being extremely efficient at tearing the Submarine's hull.

Despite the creature's apparent blindness, mechanically it does possess the ability of sight, albeit slightly weaker than some creatures. If you suspect a Charybdis lies ahead, it may be wise to turn all sonars to passive in an attempt to sneak by, or to lure it away with a Decoy.

The Charybdis will appear as an objective in Hunting Ground missions, but otherwise there is little reason to fight a Charybdis as they will always stay in the Abyss and unlike the smaller critters, the Charybdis drops no loot.

Much like the Endworm's sounds, the Charybdis' roars can be seen in the Navigation Terminal as orange waves originating from the Charybdis' location.

Defense-wise, the Charybdis' only armored body parts are its head, jaw and tail tip, which will absorb 75% of any Internal Damage and are immune to Bleeding. Those will also deflect projectiles. The inside of its mouth however, which can be targeted when the creature opens it, will see all Internal Damage and Bleeding multiplied by 5, and should therefore be targeted whenever the opportunity comes. The rest of the body is unarmored.

Trivia[]

  • The creature possessing a sense of sight despite having no eyes is most likely justified as it being able to sense vibrations in the waves.
  • In Greek mythology, Charybdis is the name of a sea monster able to summon deadly whirlpools by swallowing large amounts of water.
  • The design of the Charybdis underwent two radical redesigns; once during the transition into the Steam release, and then once again when it was reintroduced in 0.13.0.11 9Embrace the Abyss). The original version resembled an upside-down T-Rex.
  • Both legacy variants of the Charybdis ("Legacycharybdis" and "Charybdisold") can be spawned by the use of Console Commands or through the Character Editor
