Charybdis

The Charybdis is a Europan creature that spawns in the Abyss.

Description

The Charybdis resembles a massive eyeless whale, with an odd humpback, blacked out fins and sharp white teeth. It also has a single long tail. The body features a pale grey-ish ice blue coloration, with darker stripes along the back. The lower belly seemingly possesses a lighter tanned color. There are a group of large veins heading down from the head to the base of the neck. The curved limbs possess notably shiny scales, in contrast to the lower torso with a rough leathery texture.

Most unusually, the Charybdis heavily resembles an upside-down whale. While this is most likely unintentional, it could be used as a way to play dead as a possum would, so as to hide from larger predators that also roam the Abyss.

In-game

The Charybdis is unusually quick (but not so much as a Coelanth) and very bulky. Due to its health and damage being so high it's advised not to engage and try to evade it if possible, fighting it outside is a death sentence as it can kill humans in a single hit and can rupture the submarine's hull quite quickly as well.

Despite the creature's apparent blindness, mechanically it does possess the ability of sight, albeit slightly weaker than some creatures. If you suspect a Charybdis is ahead, it is wise to turn all sonars to passive in an attempt to sneak by.

Trivia

  • The creature possessing a sense of sight despite having no eyes is most likely justified as it being able to sense vibrations in the waves.
  • In Greek mythology, Charybdis is the name of a sea monster able to summon deadly whirlpools by swallowing large amounts of water.
  • The Charybdis has the least sound files of any creature, with only one.
  • The Charybdis bears a resemblance to the taumafiskur, an evil whale of Icelandic legend. Its grey, whale-like skin and aggression towards subs patrolling the waters near its territory.
